Social Action – Moving Forward!!

November 29, 2010

The Social Action Committee will be meeting on Sunday, December 12th from 9:30 until noon at Havurah for a breakfast potluck.  We’ll be reviewing the Operation Re-connect process of seeking input from the congregation regarding social action, and discussing the congregation’s feedback. We’ll also be discussing next steps in doing congregation outreach. Please feel free to join us. If you have questions or would like additional information, please feel free to contact Ben Walters, the committee chair.

Inclement Weather and Havurah Events

November 23, 2010

As we head into the stormy winter weather, please be aware that some events may be postponed or cancelled due to icy road conditions.  If the weather seems to interfere with safe driving, we will record a cancellation message on the main Havurah Shalom phone message (503-248-4662) at least 2 hours before each event and update the website calendar.

Havurah Takes Donations On-Line

November 8, 2010

Anyone who wishes to make a donation to Havurah can now do so using our secure on-line link.  You can use your credit card and you will be able to designate a Fund for the donation, indicate if the donation is in honor or memory of someone and even make it recurring!  It’s very user-friendly, just go to this link.  You will get a receipt e-mailed to you immediately and a copy goes to the Havurah office so that Tribute notes can still go out.

The link for these donations is also found on every page of our website.  Look in the footer area for “Donate Securely to Havurah Shalom”.

Please remember that Havurah will pay a fee for credit card transactions, so consider adding a little to your donation to cover this.  Typically, the fee is 3-4% (fees vary based on the type of credit card you use).

Read Rabbi Joey’s Book Review on David Grossman’s To the End of the Land.

November 5, 2010

In theory, a woman’s view of big events would dispense with hype we commonly associate with androcentric historiography.  David Grossman’s tour de force, To the End of the Land, attempts this authorial subterfuge. It’s a double-nuanced title, but the original Hebrew name for the novel translates to something more like Woman Running Away from the News. In fact, she (whose life serves as a prism for all else that has happened in this story of stories) cannot tolerate hearing anything more, especially regarding her soldier son’s safety.  At sixty, she instead hikes the land, out of cell-phone range, and brings along an old friend.  Everyone wants to check in these days and be apprised of what’s happening, but when it comes to happenings in the family, especially when survival is the ever-present leitmotif, getting away from it all is sometimes necessary.
