Middle School Grades 7-8

The goals of Havurah Middle School are Kehillah and Kesher (“Community” and “Connection”.)  The Havurah Middle School program aims to be fun and help students stay connected with their friends and/or expand their circle of relationships and community. It is structured to be less time-intensive because many families are involved with Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation or other transitions. Classes and activities tend toward a focus that is more cultural than religious, exposing students to diverse ways of being Jewish.

Havurah Middle School Kids Building Confidence and Team-Work in an Outdoor Ropes CourseDesigned for 7th and 8th graders, the Middle School offers students and families a unique blend of programs, including Wednesday night Beit Midrash (House of Study) classes, Shabbat Dinners, Tikkun Olam projects, and weekend retreats. Students and families can elect to participate in any individual program, or in all of them!

This winter Leeza Negelev, our Youth Educator, will be teaching four brand new classes, helping to organize social events and Tikkun Olam projects. She and fellow Middle School Committee members will be contacting new families over the next months to hear your thoughts about the program.

If you have any questions not answered here, please contact our Middle School Committee via email, or call (503) 248-4662.

When Do Havurah Middle Schoolers Meet?

Havurah Middle School classes meet on twelve Wednesday nights. Middle Schoolers join the Havurah High students to eat dinner together and socialize from 6:30 – 7:00 pm.  From 7:00 – 8:30 pm the students have class (and dessert). Another part of the program is the social activities and Tikkun Olam (Repair the World) projects. These will happen on three Sundays throughout the year. Please see the events schedule below.

What Roles Do Havurah Middle School Parents Play?

All parents participate in making the Middle School program happen. Some parents join the  High School parents to provide dinners. Others teach Jewish Cooking or Film-Making.  Some parents work with Leeza to plan social activities and Tikkun Olam projects. Please check out our special Parent as Coach class, too.
